From Brooklyn to Bombay rave reviews and standing ovations have greeted her storytelling performances and literary readings. She has appeared on countless radio and television programs, at cafes, colleges and conferences, educational, spiritual, and cultural institutions, arts arenas, business, healing and health establishments. Her venues have included Columbia University, Skidmore College, Carnegie-Mellon Institute, Claremont College, United Nations, The Kitchen, Museum of Natural History, International Center for Cultural Studies, Huntington Women’s Studies Association, PEN America, The Open Center, the Nuyorican Poets Café, and the Center for Policy Studies.
Author of the acclaimed bestseller Soul Between The Lines: Freeing Your Creative Spirit Through Writing (Avon/HarperCollins), her publications include Muse Blues, Woman, Fierce With Reality, Family, The Passion Collection and A Taste of Tamarinda. She has also been a contributor to such periodicals and anthologies as Personal Journaling, Heart&Soul, the NYTimes, Drum Voices, SisterFire, HealthQuest, and Conditions.
A former Poet-in-Residence at Hunter College, NYU faculty member, NiaOnline columnist, and commentator for National Public Radio, Dorothy is a current board member of the International Women’s Writing Guild, and founder of the Heartland Institute for Transformation. In her commitment to global healing she has shared the dais with the Dalai Lama, served as a UNESCO delegate, and conducted educational supply campaigns for schools and villages in Africa.
As an administrator of the Tisch School’s highly respected Creative Arts Team Dorothy coordinated educational theater programs for at-risk youth in New York City’s public schools. She is also the former Executive Director of Red Hook Arts, an educational arts youth organization which provided art, music, dance, drama and cultural programs to an underserved Brooklyn community.
